Performer Notes
  • Liner Note Authors: Janet Topp Fargion; Tony Engle.
  • Introduction by: Reg Hall .
  • Part of Topic Records' wonderful Voice of the People series, You Never Heard So Sweet: Songs by Southern English Traditional Singers collects 25 a cappella recordings, all of which were made by folk historians Peter Kennedy and Bob Copper during the 1950s. Hand-selected by Shirley Collins, the songs range from the familiar ("Bonny Bunch of Roses O," "Foggy Dew") to the oft-overlooked ("The Folkestone Murder," "Old Johnny Buckle"), offering up a nice balance of drinking songs, lovelorn ballads, and sea shanties. The performers vary as well, with highlights coming from stalwart British folk icons like Harry Upton ("Canadee-i-o") and George Attrill ("The Broken-Down Gentleman"), as well as less familiar singers such as Turp Brown ("Six Jolly Miners") and Luther Hills and Mark Fuller ("Dame Durden"). ~ James Christopher Monger
